Modification of polymeric materials (for example, polyethylene) with carbon nanotubes allows to increase polymer strength, resistance to degradation under the influence of the sun and low temperatures. However, to obtain such composites, nanotubes should be distributed evenly in polyethylene, which is difficult to achieve due to their small size and high propensity for aggregation.

The researchers from the laboratory of catalytic polymerization and the laboratory of nanostructured carbon materials of the Institute of Catalysis named after G. K. Boreskov of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences suggested placing carbon nanotubes in the composition of polyethylene directly during its synthesis with the help of a titanium-containing polymerization catalyst.

The results obtained by Siberian chemists can later be used to create target products with new consumer properties. The researchers hope in the nearest future to go to the stage of development work.
