George Olah was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1927. Olah graduated from Budapest Technical University and there he received a doctoral degree.

He started his scientific career with Hungarian chemist Qeza Zempel. In the early 1950's, Olah created a research team at the Institute of Organic Chemistry in Budapest Technical University and at the same time he was one of the founders of the Central Scientific-Research Institute of Chemistry at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1954.

In 1957 he moved to Canada and until 1965 he worked in Dou Chemical in Canada and the United States, and then returned to the higher education system. Under his leadership, the Chemistry Departments of the Western Institute of Reserve and the Keys Technology Institute in Cleveland, Ohio, were joined. In 1977, he entered the University of Southern California, where he later founded the Institute for Hydrocarbon named after Loker.

He has been a member of the US National Academy of Sciences since 1976, and since 1990 he is a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He was awarded with the most prominent US scientists award the Alexander Gold Gumboldt Award (1979) and in 1996, F.A. Kotton medal, and many other awards.

Since 1996, a series of lectures by his name has been read at the University of Southern California.

In 1994 he was awarded with the Nobel Prize for "Services to Carbocation Chemistry".
