The authors of the work proved that with increasing temperature and pressure it is possible to obtain an aqueous solution of oil, and analyzed its composition. The sample was heated to 3600С together with heavy water (in which hydrogen was replaced by deuterium) or heavy oxygen water (oxygen 16 O replaced by 18 O) at a pressure of more than 300 atmospheres for an hour.
The scientists compared the mass spectra of the original sample and the sample after the exchange reaction. The obtained data allowed us to obtain more information about the structure of the compounds containing in the oil. A similar method can be applied to the study of other complex non-polar compounds at the molecular level.
The work has been published in the journal Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry.
