The scientists from the Institute of High Molecular Compounds of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IHC RAS) have created artificial cartilage based on polymeric materials that can be used to help those who suffer from joint diseases. The director of the IHC RAS Sergei Lyulin told TASS about this: "We have carried out the synthesis of special materials based on polyacrylamide hydrogel and cellulose, which allowed us to obtain a material similar in properties to cartilage tissue."

According to him, acrylamide polymer is synthesized in the fibers of bacterial cellulose, which is produced by bacteria at properly selected temperature and humidity. Due to the natural origin these fibers are harmless to human, says the scientist.

The developed material can be used in the restoration of local areas of articular cartilage and damaged areas of intervertebral disks, as well as in cosmetic medicine.
